M.R at The Dollhouse: Reflections on a College House Show Run

Syracuse University, my alma mater, boasts a rich history of house shows and DIY culture. Over the years, I've witnessed many outstanding shows and bands in the sprawling basements within a several-mile radius of the University's student neighborhoods. Additionally, I've had the privilege of hosting nearly a hundred shows myself, a journey that began with working alongside bands and managing some of my initial clients. Collaborating with like-minded individuals who aspire to continue this legacy and exemplify the dynamic synergy of collaboration and dedicated entrepreneurship within this scene has always been a privilege I wholeheartedly embrace.

Working alongside a passionate group of students at the newest college spot, The Dollhouse, our shared objective was to curate a diverse mix-genre lineup that reflected the varied tastes within the local and student community. The lineup featured the ethereal post-rock sounds of Boston’s Walk Me Home, the post-punk resonance of Jerry Big's World Famous Band from Rochester, and the intense post-metal compositions of Syracuse’s Quantifier. On a completely unrelated note, for those familiar, I am Jerry Big, yet also M.R.

Despite the inherent challenges of promoting an event on a modest budget, our team successfully leveraged the power of social media and word-of-mouth to generate substantial student interest. The palpable anticipation surrounding the event culminated in a memorable weekend run with Quantifier and Jerry Big's World Famous Band, where I had the opportunity to tour manage. Both bands played to packed student crowds in Syracuse at SU and Rochester at RIT. The atmosphere at both shows pulsated with the genuine energy of DIY culture, with crowd surfing, mosh pits, and the occasional wall of death serving as conduits for shared experiences and a collective appreciation for alternative music. It was a wild joyride of shows.

This weekend adventure highlighted the profound impact of fostering connections through music, emphasizing that the DIY spirit extends beyond the music itself to the shared experience with everyone involved. It was a celebration of unity, genuine camaraderie, and an unwavering passion for supporting emerging artists. This experience serves as a poignant reminder that the pulse of alternative music lies in the hands of those willing to navigate uncharted territories, experiment with genres, and cultivate spaces where the authentic love for music resonates on a visceral level. Here's to more weekends dedicated to cultivating music, fostering meaningful connections, and perpetuating the enduring spirit of the house show scene in Syracuse.
